Visitor network instructions

The visitor network has been set up to enable our visitors' access to the Internet. The government computer security policies do not allow connecting non-NIST network equipment to the internal government networks, so we set up a special, protected network that allows access to the Internet outside of NIST, while cutting off access to the inside of NIST. The short-term visitor machines can be connected to the network only in designated visitor areas, as per instructions distributed with other visitor intake paperwork. Visitors are required to maintain current OS patches and virus definitions on their machines.

To enable retrieving current NCNR data from the visitor network, one computer, charlotte.ncnr.nist.gov (AKA www-i.ncnr.nist.gov) has been specifically made reachable from the visitor network. It exports Windows shares and FTP services with the current data files.
