Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (IRRAS) at the Air/Water Interface

Andreas Kerth, Institut fuer Physikalische Chemie, Martin-Luther-Universitaet Halle-Wittenberg, Halle, Germany

An introduction to the infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) technique at the air/water interface in theory and experiment will be given. IRRAS is a valuable tool to determine the molecular orientation and the conformation of molecules at the air/water interface.

There will be several applications presented:
- liquid crystal 8-cyano-biphenyl (8CB)
- mixture of lipids: phospholipids (DPPC, DMPC) and gangliosides
- interaction of phospholipid POPG and peptide KLAL
- interaction of phospholipid DPhPC and triblock copolymer PEO10F11
